Resources: Addiction

Drugs, alcohol, food, gaming, pornography – the list of modern addictions is long. And then there are pseudo-addictions to approval, control, power and more. Can we help each other become free?

Addictions do more than tempt us, they ensnare. They promise us what we want – peace, comfort, control, a sense of taking the suffering away – and, yet, they offer nothing but pain. Addictions drive us to act in ways that are ungodly and unwise. They destroy us and the relationships we hold dear. But they don’t have to hold sway. In Christ, there is liberation – there is hope.

Some addictions will need the wise oversight of medical professionals – others less so. But the battle against any destructive habit is best won in the strength of God and his community, the church. He is the one who can break the chains and set us free – we are the ones who are able to speak the truth in love to one another that help us take off our old self and put on our new.

The resources that follow may help you play your part in spurring others on towards freedom.
