What to expect

COURSE WORK:

This 5 day residential course will train students in advanced helping skills for counselling ministry. Aimed at those who are providing care at the more formal level of interpersonal ministry, it will equip students offering pastoral care, biblical counselling or one-to-one conversations with more complex problems. It will examine the importance of character as well as specific skills. Class lectures, discussions, role-plays, counselling observation and response papers will aid self-reflection and growth in helping skills contributing to effective counselling ministry.  

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To understand and be able to articulate the character strengths and key advanced helping skills required to be effective in counselling ministry of the Word.   
  • To recognise and apply character qualities and helping skills through counselling triads.   
  • To identify your strengths and weaknesses in counselling ministry, noting in particular (i) character and heart issues that affect your ministry, and (ii) helping skills that need improvement.   
  • To improve your ability to give and receive feedback.

Advanced Certificate in Skills for Biblical Counselling

The Advanced Certificate in Skills for Biblical Counselling courses will help students develop advanced helping skills for more formal pastoral/counselling conversations. Courses will include CCEF’s Marriage Counselling course, and two new BCUK courses, Counselling Embodied Souls and Advanced Skills Training.

Meet your teacher

Andrew Collins has spent many years working as a consultant psychiatrist in Belfast alongside part-time work providing biblical counselling. He is an elder at his church in Portadown, Northern Ireland. He tutors on the BCUK Certificate Programme in Belfast. Andrew’s role with BCUK seeks to serve experienced carers with training and resources to grow their wisdom and skill in counselling ministry.
