The aim of this one-day Skills Training module is to build on the initial training of the Foundation Skills day. This will give students an opportunity to practise the skills relevant to the conversational ministry taught in the Intermediate courses: Helping Everyday Problems, Relationships in Life and Church, and Scripture for Life and Ministry.
It will be a mix of teaching from the front, observation and practice in pairs – Dyads – all with input from your tutors to support and help you.
This one-day Intermediate Skills Training Day is designed to help you practise some of the skills taught in the HEP, RLC and SLM courses.

Skill Area #1: Relating to One Another
Focus Skills: Going deeper and being aware
We go deeper with someone as we ask questions with direction and follow stories, words, emotions and
images that are most relevant. We converse with awareness when we pay attention to how we are
relating to one another in conversation and make use of loving self-disclosure.
The first Observation and Dyad session 2 will focus here.
Skill Area #2: Relating together to the Lord
Focus Skills: Hearing and Living Out His Word
As we hear God’s word and speak it in His way, we add to the person’s story, and respond in prayer. We
help someone live out His word as we envision change and enact next steps.
The second Observation and Dyad session 3 will focus here.

How do the Skills Days fit into the Certificate Programme?
- The Foundation Skills Day is aimed at those who are studying or have studied the Foundation Certificate in Conversational Ministry (Dynamics of Biblical Change, Helping Relationships, Church Pastoral Care).
- The Intermediate Skills Day is aimed at those who are studying or have studied the Intermediate Certificate in Conversational Ministry (Helping Everyday Problems, Relationships in Life and Church, Scripture in Life and Ministry)
- And the week-long Advanced Skills Training course is for those who are working their way through the Advanced Certificate in Counselling Ministry.
In practice, we understand that students will complete these days at a variety of times and stages.
- The Foundation and Intermediate Skills Days are optional. Students do not need to complete these days in order to receive a Foundation or Intermediate Certificate.
- The Foundation Skills Day is not a mandatory pre-requisite for the Intermediate Skills Day. Whilst there will be real merit in a student doing the Foundation Skills Day one year and the Intermediate Skills Day in a subsequent year, these are stand alone days and a student can do the Intermediate Day without having first done the Foundation Day.
- Similarly, participation in the Advanced Skills Training course does not carry a mandatory requirement for students to have done a Foundation and Intermediate Skills Day first. We would prefer people to have done Foundation and Intermediate first but it is not compulsory.
- Those people wanting to apply for a place on the BCUK Intern Scheme will be required to have passed the Advanced Skills Training course. It will be a bonus if they have completed the Foundation and Intermediate Skills Days as well, but completion of these days is not a requirement of the programme.
