This one-day Foundation Skills Training Day is designed to help you practise some of the skills taught in the Helping Relationships course.
The aim of the day is that you will have an opportunity to practise, to reflect upon and to grow in practical conversational skills that can lead to praying with another person.
It will be a mix of teaching from the front, exercises, observation and practice in pairs – Dyads – all with input from your tutors to support and help you.

Overview of Skill Areas
Skill Area #1: Know the Person through listening, understanding, and connecting
Focus Skills: Listening, Understanding, Connecting
We want to know another person by learning to listen well. This leads to understanding the person as we summarise, reflect and ask good questions. We will connect well with another by being compassionate, slowing down, and following their words and emotions closely.
The first Observation and Dyad sessions will focus here.
Skill Area #2: Know the Lord through seeing, sharing, and praying
Focus Skills: Seeing, Sharing, Praying
We help a person to know the Lord by seeing the ways the story of their lives connects with the story of Scripture. We want to grow in how we share that truth in helpful ways. We want together to know the Lord by praying with one another.
The second Observation and Dyad session will focus here.

How do the Skills Days fit into the Certificate Programme?
- The Foundation Skills Day is aimed at those who are currently undertaking or who have recently undertaken Helping Relationships.
- The Intermediate Skills Day is aimed at those who are currently undertaking or who have recently undertaken Helping Everyday Problems.
- And the week-long Advanced Skills Training course is for those who are working their way through the Advanced Certificate.
In practice, we understand that students will complete these days at a variety of times and stages.
- The Foundation and Intermediate Skills Days are optional. Students do not need to complete these days in order to receive a Foundation or Intermediate Certificate.
- The Foundation Skills Day is not a mandatory pre-requisite for the Intermediate Skills Day. Whilst there will be real merit in a student doing the Foundation Skills Day one year and the Intermediate Skills Day in a subsequent year, these are stand alone days and a student can do the Intermediate Day without having first done the Foundation Day.
- Similarly, participation in the Advanced Skills Training course does not carry a mandatory requirement for students to have done a Foundation and Intermediate Skills Day first. We would prefer people to have done Foundation and Intermediate first but it is not compulsory.
- Those people wanting to apply for a place on the BCUK Intern Scheme will be required to have passed the Advanced Skills Training course. It will be a bonus if they have completed the Foundation and Intermediate Skills Days as well, but completion of these days is not a requirement of the programme.
